I have a lipoma on my forehead , can it be removed for cosmetic reasons, is it expensive, is it neccessary?

I am very self consious about it and i cannot cut my hair low because it would be more visible. It is about the size of a pea and it is located just below the hairline in the middle
Answer:
See a plastic surgeon. Most likely they can remove it and give you a minimal scar right at the hair line.
It is a good idea to get it removed and check for malignancy if any, more than cosmetic reasons.
Are you sure it's a lipoma and not a sist Lipomas are comprised of fat that has hardened my husband has one on his back the size of a golf ball. They wont remove it because of the proximity to his spine. Yours should be easily removable by your regular doctor in one afternoon.
Have you received a definitive diagnosis of lipoma? I'm assuming you have to use the terminology. It's not absolutely necessary to have lipomas removed unless they start to cause pressure on underlying structures. Then it would become medically necessary.Since it's on your face, having a plastic surgeon remove it would be best, but due to its small size and proximity to the scalp, any scarring would be minimal (unless you're prone to keloids...an abnormal overgrowth of scar tissue). The expense would probably vary widely depending on who performed the procedure. Your family doctor could remove it in his or her office at much less expense than it would cost to have a plastic surgery consult and removal. When in doubt, call and ask for a ballpark figure. Also, if you have medical insurance and haven't received a diagnosis from a physician, you should start there. Depending on the results of your exam, your doctor may elect to remove it and send it to a pathology lab for testing if it has any characteristics other than that of a lipoma. Your insurance would probably cover at least part of that. Do call beforehand to make sure, though. And who knows? They may elect to pay for the entire procedure anyway.Good luck!
